The startup events of 2014 that can’t be missed

CleanWeb, Smau, InnovActionLab, MakerFaire, TechGarage, and all of the other appointments that startups should not miss. Save these dates!

The calendar starts with the marathon for green startuppers and developers at CleanWeb in January, a Hackathon at the Luiss Enlabs accelerator, as well as innovation at Smau (making stops in Bari, Rome, Padua, Turin, Bologna, and Milan). There’s also Italian Innovation Day  organized by MindTheBridge in March at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. And the U.S. tour of  Italy’s best from UsaCamp, the appointment by Italia Camp from 25 February to 4 March, with startups making a pitch on Wall Street. The program continues for Italian startups throughout 2014 and there will be plenty of Startup Weekends, with the first one of the year in Milan followed byTurinInnovactionLab has been confirmed for mid June (with lots of novelties) andTech Garage is set for the fall. There will be a big push for startups from the Maker Faire Rome that will start at the beginning of October at the Palazzo dei Congressi, in the Eur district.

JANUARY      The year begins with a bang with three days dedicated to the development of applications to protect the environment and smart mobility from 17 to 19 January at  Luiss Enlabs during the Roma Cleanweb Hackaton. And again in Rome in via della Vasca Navale 79, at the Università Roma Tre, Codemotion starts the year on 24 and 26 January with the Global Game Jam Roma 2014, the biggest hackathon dedicated to the gaming world. It will take place simultaneously around the world, in Turin it will be at  TreataBit. In Milan, the Startup Weekend season will begin at Talent Garden Milano from 31 January to 2 February. The Barcamper goes on the road again, dividing Italy into three this year: North, Center, and South, staying three months in each area with a techmeeting organized for each tour. TechWeek is on the program as well as the TechGarage finale that will witness the best startups chosen by BarCamper at work. Startup Revolutionary Road will focus on employment, the South and women’s ideas. The Startup Revolutionary Roadproject, financed by  Microsoft YouthSpark and Fondazione Cariplo and coordinated by Fondazione Filarete, will confront startups and employment for young people.
FEBRUARY    From Milan to Bari, startuppers and innovators are set to meet at the first appointment at Smau Bari on 12 and 13 February. TEDx  will stop at Padua on March 1. “Shake your mind and lead the change” is the theme of the appointment that will take place at the Centro civico San Gaetano: scientists, startuppers, artists, economists, and visionaries will share their ideas about the future during short presentations.ItaliaCamp has organized a road show between Washington and New York from 25 February to 4 March in order to valorize Made in Italy abroad: ItaliaCamp will present the best policy and startup ideas chosen during the 3rd edition of the “La tua idea per il Paese” contest. Participants will be the protagonists of the first BarCamp at Wall Street where the best ideas will get a chance to be presented to the principle investment funds, venture capitalists, and protagonists of the global financial world.
MARCH           From 3 to 5 March the Mind The Bridge Foundation has organized  “Italian Innovation Day” at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. A special exhibition dedicated to the Italian innovators in Silicon Valley. Contributions made by startuppers will obviously be included. HERE  is the list of projects that will be involved. March is also the month for Startup Weekend Torino, set to take place at I3P, the Innovative Enterprises Incubator, at the Politecnico di Torino from the 28thto the 30th. The 54 hours of acceleration will be dedicated to food and will be organized by Treatabit. Still in March, the tri-monthly meetings organized byFondazione Filarete  that are dedicated to healthcare and innovation in health should begin. The appointments will rotate around a single theme: a conference in the morning and, in the afternoon, starts and pitches.
JUNE       2014 will even have the protagonists of innovation and business at the service of Bootstrap: last year the appointment in October was a super success and the event this year has been anticipated to June. There will also most probably be the finale of InnovactionLab around mid month, the laboratory of Augusto Coppola created to facilitate group work between students from different university faculties in order to stimulate an approach to innovation. “Innovaction Lab – explained founder Augusto Coppola – received a grant from JpMorgan Foundation this year. Our ambitions are that of holding the Roman and Lombard editions of InnovAction Lab together. In mid February we will hold a press conference in Milan and the next day at Talent Garden where we will announce all of the projects. The Milan finale will be at the end of May, beginning June. The national finale in Rome should be in the second half of June.”
OCTOBER      The wave of innovation created by  Maker Faire Rome will give a big push to startups again this year. After its successful debut, the 2014 edition of Maker Faire has been confirmed for the first week of October, taking over not only Palazzo dei Congressi in the Eur district of Rome but also spaces nearby. 2014 will also repeatFacebook Hacknight Rome: the marathon for startups and developers dedicated to social networks. The buspreneurs of StartupBus will also return.
NOVEMBER   Mind the Bridge Venture Camp (again in Milan) has been confirmed. And November will also be the month for the finale of the premio Marzotto awards. In April, the selection that is dedicated to builders of the future, the entrepreneurs of tomorrow who are capable of creating a coexistence between enterprise, society and culture, should begin.
